40 Checkpoints for Your Website Usability Audit

Usability AuditA website usability audit is the process of assessing web interfaces against some best practices on usability. The website usability audit focuses on website’s information architecture, design layout and consistency, links and labels, functionality etc. Here are the 40 checkpoints of your website usability audit. You can also rate the questions using a scale 1-5, (5 means strongly agree and 1 mean strongly disagree) for benchmarking the usability standards.

A. Overall Usability

    1. Website follows the existing conventions – the widely used standardized design patterns – example home, logo, global menu at the top on every pages
    2. Website has effective visual hierarchies – example the more important something is more prominent; similar things are grouped together etc
    3. Website visitors can easily identify what are clickable on the website
    4. Website has used brand color, clear background and high contrast throughout the site
    5. Website has used consistent pattern of space, alignment (left), and heading
    6. Website has used legible sans serif font and size as the default

B. Homepage Usability

    1. Homepage clearly and prominently communicated the brand, value and services of the library.
    2. Homepage reflects the personality and quality of the library
    3. Homepage has the necessary attributes to allow visitors start their tasks immediately
    4. Homepage and Landing page has clear “Call to Action” tasks
    5. Homepage send visitors direction to find quickly what they are looking for
    6. Homepage was easy to access from any other page on the website

C. Navigation Usability

    1. It was easy for visitors to find way through the website (Navigation elements are clearly differentiated from one another and placed in a consistent way)
    2. Important and clickable items are placed closer to the top of the page making it easy to find that information
    3. Content are grouped based on subjects or tasks or type of audience
    4. All related content and tasks are grouped in order to decrease time spent searching or scanning
    5. Category labels clearly reflect the content and items contained within the category
    6. Link labels and concepts are meaningful, understandable, and easily differentiated
    7. Website visitors always know where they are within the web site
    8. A color change was used to indicate to when a link has been visited

D. Page Design Usability

    1. Website has a good balance of graphics, text and whitespace
    2. Visual consistency of Website elements within and between Web pages has been maintained
    3. Logo and global menu of the website is placed in a consistent location on every page
    4. All clickable images are either labelled or easily understood by typical users
    5. Link texts are consistent with the title or headings on the destination (i.e., target) page
    6. Focus has been given to text links rather than image links

E. Functional Usability

  1. All website content are focused and operable through keyword
  2. Website forms work with screen readers
  3. Set expectations and provide feedback during submitting a form or checkout process. Remind people where they are in the process
  4. Provide Error Support when using a form – Prevent, Protect and Inform
  5. Mistakes are easy to correct. (i.e. change information in a form, resubmit, change locations)
  6. Interaction design has considered people of varying skill levels
  7. Visitors are always informed when a link would take them out to a new page on a different website
  8. The graphics, photos and videos on the site do not slowdown download speed rapidly
  9. Content are easily engageable and shareable with social media
  10. Website compatible with different browsers and operating systems
  11. Website has Search option in each page presented in a consistent way
  12. Website has print friendly option
  13. Website has a Privacy Statement
  14. Website has an Accessibility Statement
